Narrative Typography Project
Based on “The Haunting of Hill House”
For this project, I used a monologue from Mike Flanagan’s show, “The Haunting of Hill House” to build different design narratives. In this project, the narrative I’m crafting aligns closely with Flanagan’s themes and those expressed in Nell’s monologue in Episode 10. I housed them all in a book as a nod to the timeless symbol of fantasy: the act of opening a storybook at the beginning of a film.
Creating a New Story with Linear Narrative
Using the nouns; Creature, Monster, and Movements, the narrative of a new monster was created. The introduction of the Veilshift, a shape-shifting creature capable of assuming various faces, draws parallels to the nature of The Red Room, which manifests differently to each individual. These glasses possess the ability to see through the creature’s disguises, enabling individuals to reveal its true form.
A Story Without Images
This book uses the noun, ‘Moments’ to symbolize the idea that time is not linear, rather moments fall around us like confetti.
The moments are created using typefaces created across multiple decades. They’re printed on acetate in varying opacities and used to create confetti of different sizes to show the different weights a moment can have on your life.
A New Point of View
To bring a new point of view to my Veilshift story formed in Book 4, I created this mystical box. It is marked with a V and the Latin words for unmask and reveal. When using the box in the dark and repeating the inscribed incantations, you can reveal the face of a Veilshift within its form.
I created a Pepper’s Ghost effect to bring this story to life.
Context Through Place
Selecting the Red Room as the setting for the narrative was a natural choice. To authentically recreate the characters’ experiences, I built the iconic red door, complete with its lock and ghostly figure within.
No Additional Words
This key tag is intricately crafted, featuring the names of the Crain family members alongside representations of how the Red Room appeared to each of them. As you peel back each layer of the tag, you get deeper into the connection between the family members and the room itself, ending with Nell and her Mom who were taken by the room. The red string serves as a symbol of this connection.
